Sample SOP for MS in Electrical Engineering

The following SOP was submitted at a Top University in USA for the Masters in Electrical Engineering Program. This is only a sample. I would not for once venture to suggest that I always knew what I wanted to do. My career aspirations are not childhood dreams but rather a work of consistent absorption of knowledge and learning about the domain. It was all about finding my path and the journey started from my curiosity about semi-conductors. Growing curiosity and a normal penchant for science and especially physics and mathematics saw me opting for Electronics and Communication Engineering. From thence started my understanding of the domain which slowly and gradually grew into admiration and then a strong passion.

Learning about VLSI Design, I knew I wished to make a career within the said domain and decided that I would gain a better understanding by pursuing masters in electrical engineering and becoming an expert within the sector. My humble beginnings offered me modest living amidst strong respect for academic excellence. My grand-father, an English teacher, would often take out time to condition my mind and encourage me to take the path of education. Supported by equally informed parents, I succeeded throughout my school years in every domain. Such has been my journey that on one hand I have the honour of being the captain of the cricket tournament winning school team and on the other, I have the credit of standing first in my school and being applauded for the same. Moving with such a feathered cap, my graduation year was bound to have an illustrious tenure and as promised, it was.

Choosing Electronics and Communication Engineering was by far the wisest decision of my life for the subjects fell in the natural scope of things in my life. I was able to quickly assimilate the information and readily implement the same in a variety of projects. While my performance was excellent in all subjects throughout my graduation, I was effectively fascinated by VLSI design. And due to strong affliction for VLSI design, I have done my major projects in this domain. My major project was design and verification of dual port asynchronous RAM using HDLs. The project completed under the mentorship of Mr. XYZ received excellent appreciations and a “Bravo” from the organization, further instilling in me the confidence to keep working in the domain.

More importantly, the work also presented to me the wide possibilities of the technology and left me desirous of learning more. The strong inclination guided me in the last semester as well when I opted for some back end courses on VLSI. My many projects which were a key step towards implementing my theoretical knowledge were “Design, simulation and verification of ALU on Cadence virtuoso” and Complete DRC and LVS check of inverter and NAND gate using Cadence and Tanner Tool. Apart from that I also worked on Telephone Billing System using C, Railway Ticket system in C++. After studying 8085 microcontroller as a semester subject, I gained the knowledge of assembly language and I have designed traffic light controller in assembly language using Kiel and Proteus.

Apart from academics, like in school, in college too I was as active as I could be both in and out of the class. From being the class representative to the organizer of the fresher’s induction program for the class of 20XX-XX, I ensured that I was always where the action was. My technical aptitude and acumen put me in the top place and I was the designated Event Coordinator of the Technical Paper Presentation during the college’s Cultural Festival. My participation further added to my mental aptitude the skills like team work, leadership and communication. Assisted by such attributes, I moved on towards my career choice and opted for a job which would help me with my aspirations. I completed a six month internship in VLSI Design from ABCD Pvt Ltd, Noida and also attended a month Long Training in PCB Designing and Making. The experiences further gave me the opportunity to learn HDLS like Verilog and Scripting, which further ensured that I was selected in and joined XYZ Pvt Ltd. as a Software Engineer.

Over the past 2 years I have extensively worked on verification methodology based on assertion verification system. Leading teams, I have learnt the art of adaption, execution, direction and implementation. My performance soon gave my manager the confidence and I was given the opportunity to lead the team, all by myself while my manager was transferred to another unit. My ability to handle team, manage the technology and most importantly handle the various challenges has won me many awards and recognition in the organization.

All of my experience has brought to light the inherent need of constant learning as well as the necessity of innovation and I believe that I have now reached the stage here I must now further enrich my knowledge. I now seek to further delve into the research division of the technology and bring myself to the level of expertise in design verification and validation. Moving on to your university, I seek to enrich my understanding level and gain the necessary understanding of latest in VLSI. I aim at learning about VLSI design and computer architecture. I am competent and confident for the same and strongly believe that master’s at this juncture would give me the necessary push and momentum that would hasten my steps towards my aspired career of a Design Expert.

The Masters’s Program in Electrical Engineering with special emphasis on VLSI Design from ABC University is the perfect match for my career aspirations. I am impressed by the extensive curriculum and the excellent peer network the institute offers. More importantly, I am particularly keen on Prof. XYZ’s ongoing research on VLSI design and look forward to learning from him and if possible being a member of his elite team. I am also rather excited about the Electrical Lab at the University and the excellent infrastructure which would assist me in my aspirations to carry on my own independent research. To sum up, I have the skill and the aspirations and now seek the right platform to move towards my goals. And your university provides me the same.
