Oral health to me is overall health.
These days, advocates for proper access to medical and oral health care have been asking for expansion in the scope of practice of physicians and dentists. In the recent years the personal oral and hygiene in my country is given significant importance and proportionately the careers associated with the oral hygiene industry have also gone up.Today it is the norm and we need to understand barriers that stand in the way of permitting dentists to participate more in primary health care, and physicians to participate more in oral health care, so that both professions can collaborate.
And here I am seeing the wider picture of this medical frame where I am aware that primary and oral health care is one!
Dr. (example), From an early age, dentists have always had a strong and lasting impact on me, I have always considered their work mentally challenging and an excellent ‘hands-on’ profession. The initial ideaof taking dentistry as a prospective career came to me on a family holiday, when I spent time with my cousin who was anindependent practicing dentist, in year (example) I took my first step towards this career which was to do BDS and thereafter there was no looking back. After this degree, I started working in the capacity of an Honorary Dental Doctor at a very renowned establishment. It has been almost (example) years of my professional journey and now the past achievements and zeal in me to advance is pushing me to take hold of another stepladder where I seek to do Masters degree in Dental Public & Primary Health (Coursework & Dissertation) (A higher degree which is having masters credibility and is a new generation course) from UWA- University of Western Australia.
Giving out a practical fact I admit that, in my previous education I was just trained in the technical aspects of General microbiology and Pathology, Surgery and Periodontology etc but the same qualification totally/absolutely sans the modern day approaches such as- Oral Health Promotion, Research Methods in Dental Public and Primary Health, Health Systems and Economics etc. These are some behavioral key issues which have the deeper roots into the gender and social analysis on economic parameters too. Being a doctor, I believe that these factors play a pivotal role in shaping up of the final medical assessment and in order to learn further about the research competence and critical analysis, along with the advance knowledge and required skills in dental public health which will make me a specialized professional in this area, I was in the hunt for a course/education training which addresses the professional primary health challenges too.
I am associated with the clinical side of my profession and doingMDS (followed by clearing NEET entrance)was the much suited and the logical progression in India but I was not really keen for this as this was the outdated trend which students used to follow before 2010 in India in order to secure a good seat as a faculty in colleges/universities as a lecturer for the good financial returns or for the clinical practitioners for the additional knowledge in the subject and learning any specialization to setup their own venture after considering the parameters like location and drift of competition. But now that the scenario has changed owing to the catalyst of globalization and pan-education more innovative courses have been introduced. If I compare the local trend vs. global, I require commenting that entrepreneurial activities and bridging tendency is more relevant overseas professionally and the same has pushed the education governance to design the courses which are having some innovative frontswith unique blend. That is the reason courses like Dental Public & Primary Health and Dental Public Health are available worldwide. Thus, I was willing to find the suitable course/ education provider/ country as per my requirement.I convinced myself tothink global and act localin here.
As I was determined to study abroad –USA and Australiawere the two countries which were my preferred destinations. I made a very deep research about USA and came across many striking facts about strict visa regulations, NBDE examination and I also came across two universities – Ohio State University, Boston University for their MS program in Dental Public Health but upon browsing the course I realized that It was truly not what I was looking for and moreover, US is one country which is having the highest fee and living cost requirements than any other part of this world and thus this option was eliminated and I moved to my second preference in the queue which was a Oceania country- Australia.
Australia- ‘The country Continent’ had so many lucrative things to offer such as- new generation courses which comprised medical and primary health care segments, the country holds world’s top 2% education providers which are known for the excellence and teaching quality. Commenting upon the financial requirements put forward in terms of fee and living cost, I require saying that it was much lower than USA. The international student mix enjoys the international multiculturalism which provides an additional benefit while undertaking education at that country thus I was offered –‘Value for money’ and ‘More than a great education’ by this country and I ended up finalizing this name.
Final thing was to select a course and I came acrossUniversity of Western Australia, Griffith University, University of Adelaide etc. When I browsed the courses offered by all these universities I went on eliminating University of Adelaide and Griffith University because courses offered by these two institutions were having clinical components of dentistry and lacked the other behavioral determinants and then I came across a course which was designed for dental practitioners/ professionals with an interest in Dental Public & Primary Health. The course structure comprised ofManagement and Financing of Oral Health Services, Health Systems and Economics, Oral health promotion etc.Such a beautiful program was not featured anywhere else and I clinched upon this opportunity to do it which includeduse of economic methods in the evaluation of health care decisions and health care policies, measurement and data analysis in dental research etc. This was the program majorly which pushed me to finalize University of Western Australia’s course offered by theFaculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
I did more search about this institution; I found that University of Western Australia is a part of Group of Eight Universities. My research on internet has revealed that if we consider world rankings, Group of Eight (Go8) are consistently among the highestrankingUniversities from Australia. All Go8 members have consistentlyfound mention in top 200 institutions of the world in the World Universities’Academic Ranking from the QS (QS World University Rankings),THES (Times Higher Education World Rankings)andARWU (Shanghai Jiao Tong University). Being a part of Group of 8 Universities, this university is one of the universities receiving huge grants and funding from Australian government for research field and are rated highest in research areas. These factors speak high about a university and were enough reasons for me to choose this university over other universities.
After the completion of this degree at UWA, I will be having immense career options in the field of dental primary and public health care. The advantage of this international degree will give me proficiency and the edge to seek further the employment cross border too and I am aware of the scenario thatGulf Countries and USAare the top destinations for sighting this professional occupation which benefits in the terms of monetary terms too but before this longer-term goal I wish to come to India, and with the latest skills and enhanced professionalism, I will have the opportunity to workin both public and private sectors. Some of the wide ranges of employment opportunities available for dentists are Dental Departments of Government/ Army departments or private hospitals, health promotion departments, Medical Insurance firms and Researcher or advisor in Pharmaceuticals or dental care company which are involved in the back end policy making chore.
Thus, aiming at the most excellent, I am today putting my student visa application to study at one of the finest destinations of this world- Australia. I am confident that I will be accorded the opportunity to study at my chosen destination which will pave the way to fulfil my career aspirations.
